I am needing to do some projects that will require proofreading and formatting in MS Word. I have had mixed results with both screen readers. The JAWS 14 Text analyzer is telling me when I am at the end of a bolded section of text, but it will not pick up the beginning of the bolded passage! I just think if it is missing something as basic as that, what else may it be missing? NVDA seems overall more stable on my system where Word 2010 is concerned, but it doesn't have the option to view Revisions etc. Just wondering what people's opinions are, if you've had to do university projects or what have you. Thanks!
Both JAWS and NVDA have their issues with word 2010, unfortunately. While NVDA is a bit more stable, I find JAWS gives more information over all, but you do have to know what you're doing and getting a sighted person to look your document over quickly is never a bad idea. I've had to do papers for university that require certain font colours, hanging indents, italics, etc. (By the way, if you want to know if you're at the beginning of a bolded section you can hit insert f and it should give you all the font details, though I know it is a pain that the text analyzer is a bit faulty that way). JAWS also has some very handy shortcut keys that I'm not sure if NVDA can make use of, as they may or may not be exclusive to JAWS.
Good luck!
I prefer NVDA, as it has an automatic text analyzer that says that I am going into various text elements. I can't really stand JAWS, because it locks up my computer.
That's true, I've had similar issues with JAWS and word, specifically. I'm not sure why but it seems to slow everything down, especially when opening/closing documents, saving large documents, or pasting large blocks of text. Sometimes repairing word will help, as it seems the program gets bogged down after awhile, but JAWS being as big a resource hog as it is, NVDA is more responsive on the whole.
NVDA all the way. I don't use word, but I do use jartt. t as you sure NVDA will tell you where you are
Holy shit, I love Jart to the point where I could mary the damn thing. For all his purposes, though, Leaffan would be better off writing in Latex.
Never heard of that. What is it?
Latex is a markup language which simply takes MS Word and makes it writeable in tags. Not to be confused wsth HTML, Latex is for writing purposes. I have used it once, and I used it successfully with an APA style paper I had to write in last year's freshman English class.
Oh okay, thanks.
You are very much welcome. Literally, as the language is open source. So, I hope you can make good use of Latex.
